What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a fibrous naturally occurring mineral that is resistant to heat and fire, and does not conduct electricity. These remarkable properties made it popular in numerous industries, including building and construction.
Asbestos can be found in friable or non-friable form. Friable asbestos products are loose and when dry, crumble easily under very light pressure turning into a fine dust. Non-friable asbestos is solid and does not crumble under hand pressure.
Asbestos was used to strengthen cement and plastics. Additionally, the material was also used for fireproofing, sound proofing and insulation.
Where might I find asbestos?
In Australia, asbestos can be found in buildings constructed in the years leading up to the mid-1980s. According to the Australian government, approximately one third of all homes built in Australia contain asbestos products. Homes built after 1990 are unlikely to have the material.
Why is it dangerous?
Asbestos fibres are dangerous when released into the air. If they are inhaled into the lungs they can cause a range of diseases.
Asbestos related diseases include the following:
- Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs and lining of the digestive tract
- Lung cancer
- Asbestosis, a chronic lung diseases that involves scarring of lung tissue
- Pleural thickening. This is a thickening of the lining of the lungs.
Asbestos left undisturbed is unlikely to be a health risk.
If you suspect the presence of asbestos it’s best to have your building assessed by professionals. The issue is too important to ignore.
Asbestos testing is a safe and effective way to determine if material contains asbestos. We will send the sample to a NATA (the National Association of Testing Authorities) Accredited facility for analysis. Once the test is complete you will receive the results within 24 hours. If the sample tests positive we will arrange to send you a written quotation.
Asbestos removal is our specialty. We remove from both residential, commercial and industrial properties. Additionally, we are licensed to remove both friable and non-friable asbestos. This give us the advantage of being able to perform jobs of any size.
The process we follow adheres to industry regulations. We begin by clearing the areas of removable objects and debris. This is followed by lining all surfaces with dust sheets fastened with strong adhesive tape. Trained removalists will then begin the removal process. Once the removal process has finished, we clean up the site thoroughly, conduct air monitoring and issue a clearance certificate.
We can remove internal and external wall sheeting and cladding, ceilings, fire retardant materials, flooring, fencing and pipes. We also perform corrugated asbestos roof removals.
Asbestos contaminated material will be collected and transported offsite to a South Australian Government approved facility. There are asbestos waste disposal locations throughout the city. We only use facilities that are licensed by the Department of Environment and Regulation.
